2018 Southern Regional
At the Southern Regional Show Ski Tournament, the Carolina Show Ski Team travels 10+ hours to compete against Florida’s best. This year the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team will host on the beautiful Lake Silver, a 50-acre natural freshwater lake in central Florida.
Water Ski Shows
Water ski shows are an aquatic Broadway musical. Each show features several water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme and a plot. Show skiing combines components of all water ski disciplines like barefooting and wakeboarding. Unique to show skiing are water ski ballet, swivel skiing, doubles, trios, freestyle jumping, and human pyramids.
In a tournament setting, teams keep to a strict 60-minute performance time limit. As you may expect, each team receives a numeric score for their water skiing performances’ degree of difficulty and execution. Additionally, judges score setup efficiency, tear-down swiftness, boat driving, flow from act to act, music selection, announcing, costuming, and general showmanship.
The Southern Regional Show Ski Tournament is a weekend-long event where individual skiers will also compete. Expect to see groupings for swivel skiing, freestyle jumping, team jumping, and occasionally other subspecialties as determined by the tournament committee. In individual competitions, athletes showcase their talents independently, separate from a shortened performance amidst a regular water ski show. Since the skiers select all aspects of their mini-performances, individual competition is a great time to see the personalities of each competitor.
Awards & Recognition
Trophies are awarded to the top-scoring teams of the tournament as well as the top three in each individual competition. The best scoring individual acts and notable individual performers within the shows are also recognized at the closing awards ceremony.
The winning team and individuals from the southern region are eligible to compete at the National Show Ski Championships later that summer.
